Veteran’s Day 2011 (a.k.a. 11/11/11)

Friday, November 11, 2011 was a very popular date for couples wanting to have an easy time remember when they were married! All of San Diego was awash with newlyweds and the trend continued into Saturday, the 12th. It was one of our busiest and most successful weekends of the year. The evening of the 11th took us to The Handlrey Hotel and Resort right here in our own Mission Valley neighborhood. The flowers were beautiful and the evening was unspoiled by rain (not to be said for the following day). The staff at the hotel was beyond fabulous in helping us set up, tear down and cover a mistake. Kudos to you all for making our job easier (and ultimately our client happy).

We had a great day at the Bridal Bazaar in Del Mar

It was a pleasure to meet so many great brides (and their moms, friends and fiances) on Sunday at the Bridal Bazaar in Del Mar. Everyone loved the flowers that we brought and we convinced more than a few brides that yellow really is a great color for their wedding decor. I especially hope the bride getting married at Disneyland comes to see us about her flowers. How fun would that be!?!

A weekend at the beach…

October 15th and 16th had us working at the beach in Mission Bay.

Just thought I would share some photos from 2 of the weddings.

The cake was a tower of icing and blooms of white and pink roses.

The bride chose teal colored lanterns which we embellished with pink roses and white orchids with streaming teal ribbon.

The bamboo canopy was adorned with an arrangement of white and pink flowers.

Another bamboo canopy at different beach shows a different treatment that is equally beautiful. The bride chose bright orange and tropical designs for the decor.

Funeral Flowers Basics

Unfortunately, we at Michaels Flower Girl have been doing too many funerals lately.Â We hope this quick blog can help you through the decision making process in your time of grief.

The last thing you want to think about when someone dies is handling the funeral.Â In some cases, the deceased may have made all the arrangements in advance making the decision on casket, service, flowers etc.Â Then again, you may be faced with making all of the decisions yourself.

If you are in the position of making these decisions, the Funeral Home can certainly guide you on your flower choices but let us offer you some suggestions.

If you are arranging the funeral, you are going to want to make sure that the you haveÂ a spray of flowers on the casket itself.Â Depending on your religious affiliation, you may also want to provide rosary or pillow flowers.Â Casket Sprays start at about$75 and can range to over $250.Â Price is determined by size and flower choice.Â Flowers are also popular to place on the alter or pedestals besides the casket or cremains.Â These can range from $50 on up.Â If you just don’t want to make decisions, you can always say, I have a budget of XYZ and I want white and pink, and let the florist handle if from there.

If you are sending sympathy / memorial flowers, these will typically be on a wire stand adorning the sides of the casket.Â These are also called sprays.Â You can also add wording across the spray on a sash.Â Memorial sprays can range from $60.00 on up.

Flower colors are typically lighter tending towards whites.Â You are trying to convey a celebration of life with out screaming it.

Make sure to be specific with the florist about times and locations for services.Â Depending on the funeral home, you have a limited time from to deliver and set up the flowers.
