The New Year has arrived and having spent a long weekend contemplating what is in store for 2012 there are two themes that emerge among friends, colleagues and loved ones.
Number 1 – change is in the air. Perhaps this is a cliche for this time of year but it seems that folks really are ready for a change, not just talking about it! Michael’s Flower Girl will see some big changes in 2012 and we are excited to have you, our clients and friends join us for the ride.
Number 2 – more fun and less stress is in order. Personally, I have resolved to smile more and want to thank my husband and daughter for helping me in that effort.
We are looking forward to working with all the fabulous brides who have booked with us. And, I can’t wait to meet the many more who received that gorgeous ring over the holidays and are just starting their wedding planning. Congratulations to you!!

Friday, November 11, 2011 was a very popular date for couples wanting to have an easy time remember when they were married! All of San Diego was awash with newlyweds and the trend continued into Saturday, the 12th. It was one of our busiest and most successful weekends of the year. The evening of the 11th took us to The Handlrey Hotel and Resort right here in our own Mission Valley neighborhood. The flowers were beautiful and the evening was unspoiled by rain (not to be said for the following day). The staff at the hotel was beyond fabulous in helping us set up, tear down and cover a mistake. Kudos to you all for making our job easier (and ultimately our client happy).

It was a pleasure to meet so many great brides (and their moms, friends and fiances) on Sunday at the Bridal Bazaar in Del Mar. Everyone loved the flowers that we brought and we convinced more than a few brides that yellow really is a great color for their wedding decor. I especially hope the bride getting married at Disneyland comes to see us about her flowers. How fun would that be!?!

Last weekend we got to work with some really great couples who had awesome ideas for their wedding flower designs. Check out the slideshow below to get in on the weddings. We were all over San Diego county – Julian, Downtown San Diego and Mission Bay!

Every small business owner is mindful of the impact of negative on-line reviews and quakes in fear when a client is not 100% satisfied. Alas, we had the unfortunate experience of displeasing a client (a bride) a few weeks ago. She spent her entire wedding day telling everyone that would listen that she was going to “give the florist a bad review on every website in the universe” – I held out hope that she would have such a great wedding day that she would completely forget about the ineptitude of the florist (I say this tongue-in-cheek).
True to her word, the displeased client posted negative reviews on numerous websites including Yelp. If you want to read her review (and other negative reviews) you need only search for Michael’s Flower Girl and you will be presented with a disturbing scene of complaints and rants. We really do strive to do the best work possible for every client but we are human, and mistakes happen. However, no mistake has ever been so egregious so as to have warranted a 1 star review (a matter of opinion, of course). Anyway, I wanted to respond to this particular negative review because it was unfair, untrue and unequivocally non-representative of the way we serve our clients. A bit of research (specifically a google search for “how to respond to a negative Yelp review”) brought me to the page where Yelp itself is reviewed! A fascinating land of single (and negative – if only it were possible) star reviews of the company itself and it’s unfair (to businesses) practices.
Here is what I learned…
A negative review is bad. But the fact that all the positive things that have been said about you won’t appear to counteract the negative Nellies makes it even worse!
Be a responsible Yelper and take the extra effort to click the “filtered” button at the bottom of the page.
In the case of my business (and many other’s, I am sure) the filtered reviews are all 5 stars and worth looking at when making your decision on which vendor to choose.
Darlington House in La Jolla provided the perfect backdrop for charming and romantic wedding. There was just enough of a marine layer to keep things cool and comfortable (which also makes for lovely photos). A paper cone filled with a posy of flowers made for a beautiful aisle decoration. I transferred the arrangements to vases on the outdoor deck tables so they were enjoyed throughout the entire event. This wedding took place at The Catamaran Resort and Spa – one of our favorite places in San Diego!
The arch at the Karl Strauss Gardens was made even more beautiful with the floral arrangements. This was a morning wedding and it was a beautiful day in Sorrento Valley.
